Metallica se funda en 1981 en Los Ángeles por Lars Ulrich y James Hetfield a los que se sumaron Lloyd Grant y Ron McGovney. Estos dos últimos fueron sustituidos por el guitarrista Dave Mustaine y el bajista Cliff Burton. Dave dejaría la banda un año después y crearía a Megadeth. Kirk Hammett, procedente de exodus, sería su sustituto. Con el accidente sufrido por Cliff en el '86 llegaría a la banda Jason Newsted, sustituido 15 años después por Robert Trujillo (es lo que tienen las bandas con una larga trayectoria: una larga lista de ex-componentes).
Las ventas totales del grupo superan la nada despreciable cifra de 100 millones de álbums. Están considerados como unos de los 4 grupos más importantes del trash metal junto a Megadeth, Slayer y Anthrax. Por supuesto han ganado numerosos premios: 9 Grammys, 2 MTVs, 2 American Music Awards, etc., etc., etc.
Metallica comenzó a gestarse gracias a la afición de Ulrich por el heavy metal de los '70, cuando la NWOBHM (nueva Ola de Heavy Metal Británico) estaba en auge en Europa y en Dinarmarca de donde Ulrich es originario. Cuando Lars llegó a Los Ángeles se centro en explotar su capacidad musical junto a otros jóvenes. Llegó a publicar un anuncio en la revista Recycler para encontrar a un guitarrista. Sería James Hetfield, hijo de un propietario de una compañía de camiones y una cantante de ópera que respondería al anuncio y aunque al principio a James no le convencía la forma de tocar de Ulrich, acabarían llegando un entendimiento.
El nombre de la banda fue idea de un amigo de Lars, Ron Quintana, quien barajaba los nombres de Metalmania y Metallica para un nuevo fanzine musical. Lars con muy buen criterio recomendó a su amigo el nombre de Metalmania para su revista.
En sus inicios ensayaban en un local que Hetfield compartía con Ron McGoyney quien fue convencido por James para tocar el bajo y quien diseñaría el famoso logotipo de la banda. Tras una larga e intensa búsqueda de un guitarrista influido por Iron Maiden y Motorhead, Lloyd Grant hizo acto de presencia. Llego así la primera demo Hit the Ligths (1981). Lloyd fue rápidamente sustituido por Mustaine completándose de este modo el grupo.
El debut fue el 14 de marzo de 1982 en el Club Radio City de Anaheim. El debut no estuvo exento de problema debido a la inexperiencia de la joven banda. Dos semanas más tarde corrigieron los errores en el Whiskey-A-Go-Go de Los Ángeles. Pero aún así se platearon la posibilidad de buscar a un nuevo vocalista, Sammy Dijon (de los Ruthless) hizo las pruebas pero no llegó a cuajar. Lo mismo pasó con John Bush, Armored Saint y Jesse Cox; así que Hetfield siguió al frente.
En 1982 su primera demo: No Life 'til Leather (en posible homenaje a No Sleep 'til Hammersmith de Motorhead), con siete canciones y una versión más potente de Hit the Lights. Aparecen los primeros problemas con Mustaine. Lars y James le ofrece el puesto a Cliff Burton quien inicialmente lo rechaza. A finales de año y con McGovney y Mustaine todavía en el grupo aparece la segunda demo: Live Metal Up Your Ass. Exodus fueron los teloneros de uno de sus concierto y el joven Kirk Hammett dejaría impresionados a James y Lars.
Poco después de la llegada de la banda a Nueva York, Ulrich y Hetfield despiden a Mustaine no sin ponerle un billete de autobús para que volviera a casa (todo un detalle). Es el momento en que Hammett entra en el grupo. Y en 1983 por fin se graba el primer álbum: Kill 'em All. Comienzan las giras y el despegue de la banda.
En 1986 el grupo estaba de gira de presentación del tercer disco con John Marshall debido a la rotura de muñeca de Hetfield en un accidente de skate board. Cuando la banda llega a Europa, a las 6.15 horas del 27 septiembre en las carreteras suecas, Cliff Burton dormía en la litera que debía ocupar Hammett la cual perdió en una apuesta. El autobús volcó cerca de Ljungby. Hammett, Ulrich y Hetfield no sufrieron heridas graves, pero el autobús cayó sobre el bajista tras salir despedido por una de las ventanas causándole la muerte. Jason Newsted ocupó el lugar de Cliff. En 2001, el bajista Jason Newsted deja el grupo alegando motivos personales. Tras barajar a varios músicos sería Robert Trujillo quien entró a formar parte de la banda.
